"Only" 49 Matches in 1971.

THE CITIZEN, SATURDAY JULY 17, 1971

“In common with the last couple of seasons the fixture list has again been pruned. This time there are only 49 matches, 24 at home and 25 away, with trips to Cheshire and the East Midlands planned in addition to Wales and the South West.”

The article added:

The top rugby club in Britain last year, London Welsh, and another of the exile sides, London Irish, will appear on Gloucester’s fixture list in their Centenary season in two years’ time.

London Welsh was a regular date until 1952/3 when fixtures were dropped, but London Irish, who have risen to great heights in the last few seasons have never met Gloucester.

There are few surprises in the coming season’s fixture lists, although Old Blues, another long standing engagement going back to Tom Voyce’s earliest days with the club, is dropped. Of the 39 fixtures, Gloucester has only lost four times.

Clifton, who open the season on September 4, will only be met once, as will Stroud.

Camborne, who only appeared on Gloucester’s fixture list once, in 1929/30, are the second of the two tour venues at the end of the season. The other match is as usual with the Pirates from Penzance.

The last match of the season, on April 29, is the long-awaited return game with Liverpool on their home territory.
