Professional Ball Boys

By Malc King

In the early 1950s, Archie Balchin, the Club Treasurer, made the first payments to ball boys at Gloucester matches – the handsome sum of two shillings per week to Godfrey and Garth Cromwell.

So much for inflation - we were still paid 2 shillings in the 1960s, 1/6d for United fixtures and a whopping 2/6d on County matches. We had to go round to St Marks Street and ask for the balls back and 99% of the time we were given them. I believe the club gave a Christmas box annually to the residents.
