Melancholy Gloucester Folk?
Extract from the London “Morning Leader”, 7 Jan 1893, on the occasion of the England team passing through Gloucester by train on the way to lose against Wales at Cardiff:
“We had a saloon to ourselves, or at least what the Great Western Railway were pleased to call a saloon, but what others would have dignified with the name of a horse-box with seats… At Gloucester a crowd peered in to see the men who would beat Wales, but Gloucester people are of a melancholy cast and we got no fun out of them…”
As quoted in “Fields of Praise, the Official History of the Welsh Rugby Union, 1881-1981”, by David Smith and Gareth Williams, University of Wales Press, 1980.
