The Strength of Oxford University
Gloucester started the 1921-22 season with 7 wins and a draw (with Bath). Their first defeat came on Wednesday 26th October at the hands of Oxford University by 33-3, with the University scoring 7 tries to Gloucester’s one. The Gloucester side showed only 3 changes from the team which had beaten Cardiff the previous Saturday. In the Oxford pack was Viscount Encombe of MagdalenCollege. The match was described by the Gloucester correspondent as “an astounding result; Gloster completely outplayed; Oxford gave dazzling display of passing and running”.
