BBC - Gloucester Rugby Club: Great Players in the Great War

Recording broadcast for the BBC World War One At Home series with an edited version available on the BBC WW1 At Home website entitled ‘Gloucester Rugby Club: Great Players in the Great War’ available online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01p343d

The full BBC recording arranged by Richard Lawson features former Gloucester player and BBC Co-Commentator Simon Devereux reflecting on his awareness of the club’s heritage as a player. Simon interviews Martin Davies (author of ‘They played for Gloucester and fought for their Country’ and ‘For Club, King and Country’) talking about Harry Berry, an international Gloucester player who never returned from World War One action, and Mike Kean-Price, a lifelong Gloucester fan whose grandfather played for Gloucester and is also remembered on the First World War memorial at Kingsholm. The interviews reflect on players who played for Gloucester and never returned from First World War action. The recording location was Kingsholm in the 1873 Suite, Shed and Lions’ Den bar as part of the BBC World War One Centenary commemorations (1914-2014).
